Handpicked by family and friends to ensure only the finest bunches were chosen, this wine is sourced from the premier sections of our vineyard. It comes exclusively from the upper hillside blocks of high-density plantings Abel, 667, and 115 clones. Some vines yielded only three small bunches, each concentrated with intense flavour.

In the winery, 100% of the grapes were destemmed and we utilised warmer fermentation temperatures within wide stainless-steel fermenters to achieve an exceptionally high skin-to-juice ratio, enhancing flavour extraction. The wine underwent extended maceration and prolonged skin contact. It was fermented and matured separately in French François Frères hogshead barrels for 11 months. (14% new)

A powerful and concentrated take on Pinot Noir, crafted in the Burgundian style, benefits from decanting while young but also will require time in bottle to reach its full potential. We produced only a limited quantity, selecting just three barrels.

A lot of nous and care behind this wine, and it shows. This is a hauntingly beautiful pinot noir, fine-boned, fresh-feeling, that sense of energy that parlays straight into an ephemeral notion of deliciousness and a nigh-on thirst-quenching nature. Red cherries, sweet spice, alpine herbs and faint clove seasoning are the order of the day – the bouquet and palate in accord. The texture is silky but has a fine, almost pumice-stone minerally grip, drawing the wine out exceptionally long. Elegant, refined, excellent. - Mike Bennie

‘2023 Wine of the Year’

It is the exceptional balance. Despite its strength and intensity, the wine never overwhelms the senses; rather, it hits all the right notes in just the right proportions, leaving you with a finish that is both long and satisfying. Some will call it big, some will call it powerful. I call it brilliant. Worth every cent.

Over all my reviews there are only a couple of wineries, where I have stated, “I want to invest in this [winery, winemaker]” well, I have added this winery to the list…simple…

Handpicked by Scanlon family members from the top of the high density block on the Scanlon Vineyard. Fruit is fully destemmed and sees just 14% new oak. Just 3 barrels produced. There’s a tomato bush and black pepper spice here thought this was stems, but it’s not – a vineyard character? Certainly charismatic. Mint, Mushroom, tomato juice, raspberry and blackberry. There is this luscious ripe red fruit and varietal punch, with that threatening-to-be-dry-red Adelaide Hills Pinot punch, that makes this feel big and powerful, yet not overdone. A Shiraz drinkers Pinot, yet varietal. Such excellent acidity and tannins too – it’s all so right, in a way that Ashton Hills Pinot made famous. Great stuff.

The RealReview Reviews

“Deep, brooding red-purple colour with darker-fruit aromas, earthy undergrowth and black cherry. It's quite full bodied and the concentrated fruit is backed by abundant tannins. Oak is there but in balance. A pinot of real substance, and no doubt, some longevity”  – Huon Hooke
